How to Build an AI Agent for Your Business (Where You Actually Start) / Ep. 477

Bella In Your Business Podcast Cover

Learn how to build an AI agent by choosing one job, giving it the information your business runs on, and checking what it does. For pet sitters and dog walkers, Bella Vasta compares that setup to onboarding a new hire: teach your services and voice, define the boundaries, and supervise the first run. In Episode 477 of Bella In Your Business on jumpconsulting.net, she explains the starting point and shares member experiences with payroll, email and website work. She also reads Time To Pet’s September 10, 2026 response about AI tools in its accounts. This episode gives you the concept and the decisions to make before implementation. The full setup lessons and prompt materials remain inside the Jump Mastermind.

You have the payroll tabs open, the inbox waiting and one more website change you still need to explain to somebody. Downloading another app will not tell it how YOUR business works. If you want an agent but keep getting stuck at the setup, start by thinking about its first week on the job. Bella walks through the choices you need to make before you hand over more work.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Think of your first AI agent as a new hire with one clear job.
  • Identify the business information your agent needs before it works.
  • Choose permissions and review a first run before expanding access.
  • Recognize why a checker helps without replacing your judgment.
  • Hear member examples involving payroll, inboxes and website updates.

What Building an AI Agent Means for Your Pet Business

Bella closes her three-part agent series by explaining where the setup begins. She uses the new-hire comparison to make the job, business context and review process easier to understand. You hear how members use agents and where they still check the work. The implementation lessons are in the Mastermind; the episode helps you identify what you need to prepare.

How Pet Business Owners Can Think About Their First AI Agent

So, all right, what an agent is an employee made of software. That's what we're talking about today. It has one job. It has your rules, not mine, yours. It lives on your computer and it hands you a draft before it ever leaves your business. It stops and asks if it should change anything. And that's it. Like you're not building a robot and you're not writing code. I hate that they call that agent encoding. You're literally onboarding a new hire. It just looks different than you've ever done before.

Step two, I want you to set it up. And when I mean set it up, I mean like think like a new hire, on purpose. It gets its own room on your computer. So it sees only what you put in there. It gets a brain, which is your voice, your rules, your clients, your prices, the stuff you'd never say. And it gets the house rules. Like what can it touch? What can it never do without you? And then the honest line, like, do you have to set that up correctly? Yes. And that's the part I'm not going to try to teach you in a podcast because I tried to compress it and it doesn't compress. I cannot possibly auditorily walk you through this.

Write down the one job you want your new hire to do.

What Your Pet Business Needs to Teach Its AI Agent

I call her she because mine is called Nova. She's going to be like your right hand operations person. This is like the context I want you to have in your head when you set it up. She's going to show up every day. She's not sick. She doesn't need reminding and works while you sleep. Mine's called Nova. She runs my entire business behind the scenes. Your chief of staff or your second hand or whatever you want call them, they can learn anything that you teach them. OK, so you teach her your voice, your services, your clients, your SOPs, your brand, your schedule, the software that you use, all of it. OK, and that's the cool thing, too, is because they're pretty much going to know more than you ever could teach them. OK, if you hired a real chief of staff tomorrow, what would you teach him in the first week? That's how I want you to think of this. I want you to literally think of it as a person. And what exactly will your agent need to learn? Number two, hand her the playbook. The playbook is the prompt. It's what the job is, what the job is not, the formatting, the rules, the voice. And the rules that never bend, that they never can go off of. Like these are my hard boundaries. The difference between someone telling them handle my email and giving them a decision tree for every type of email.

List the business information you would give a real new hire in the first week.

How Pet Sitters Can Check an AI Agent Before Trusting It

And then you want to shadow her. You want to run the agent once with you watching. You want to check every detail. You want to fix what's wrong and you want to update the playbook. This is what I call rolling out the pizza dough because this is going to happen. And this is where a lot of people get really discouraged because they're like, oh, my gosh, it messed up. Well, yeah, mine is still learning. It will forever be learning. And you know what? Sometimes it's my fault because I'm not clear on what I want or I change what I want. All of this is normal and natural and it's fine. So when you update it and the second run is clean, then she's ready to go solo like your trust in it is going to increase the more you play with it. And then you want to hire her a QA person, the second agent. This is what I was talking about earlier. I told you to just stay tuned here. The second agent that checks the first agent's work before it ships. Now you have checks and balances built in. Do you know how wild that is? Nothing ships until the Strainer says that it's clean. And that will highly reduce the slop or the mistakes that you get.

Watch a first run and compare its output with the original records before expanding its job.

A note on the benchmark discussion: ARC Prize’s September 3, 2026 report gives GPT-6 Astra 62.7% with its Standard setup at maximum effort and 99.9% with OpenAI’s Provider Adapter at high effort. Both setups allow notes. The adapter also preserves internal reasoning state and manages context; the difference is not literally an open-book test versus no notebook. The reported 96% refers to levels completed with fewer actions than the median tested human in a specified setup. ARC Prize explicitly says the result does not establish AGI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI agent in a small business?

An AI agent is software that can use information and tools to carry out an assigned task. In this episode, Bella compares setting one up to onboarding a new hire. It needs a clear job, relevant business information and boundaries. What it can actually access or change depends on the tools and permissions you configure.

How do I decide whether to build an AI agent for my pet business?

Choose a recurring task you already understand and can check. Identify what a correct result looks like before you ask an agent to handle it. Bella’s member examples include payroll preparation, email drafts and website updates. Start with a task whose output you can review before it affects a client or your team.

Does Time To Pet allow AI tools inside an account?

On September 10, 2026, Time To Pet’s Manager of Customer Experience replied that the company does not currently prevent, block or discourage that type of use. Bella reads the response in the episode. That statement addresses the company’s position at that date. It does not establish that a particular setup is error-free or transfer responsibility for reviewing its work.

Do I need the Mastermind to build an AI agent?

Bella says there is more than one way to set up an agent. You can seek instructions elsewhere and make your own implementation choices. Her Jump Mastermind includes the AI Employee Handbook and support for the approach she teaches. This episode introduces the concepts without reproducing the private prompt or the full member lessons.

How do I know if my AI agent’s first result is correct?

Compare the result with the original records and the outcome you requested. In the episode, a member catches errors during a payroll check, which illustrates why the review matters. Correct the instructions when you find a problem and inspect another run. A second AI checker can help surface issues, but it does not prove the result is correct or replace your approval.

The choice is yours. I'm handing it to you on a silver platter. Nobody in the industry, in the pet sitting and dog walking industry is doing this. You are listening to something where you have a massive opportunity to just catapult your business in your local area, to do all of the things that you say that you've been wanting to do. Choice is yours. This is episode 477 of Bella in Your Business. Okay, before I say anything else today, I have to read you an email because half of it you've been whispering the same thing to me for a month.

Bella, isn't it against Time To Pet's terms of service to use an AI agent in there? You heard the chatter too. I know you did. So on September 7th, I emailed Time To Pet six hard questions and asked for their official answer. They escalated it. And then on on September 10th, Ashley, their manager of customer experience, wrote back her words exactly. I quote, At this time, we don't prevent the use of AI tools within a Time To Pet accounts and won't block or discourage that type of use.

So you're allowed. That excuse is gone, which is perfect because today's episode is where I finally tell you how to build one. I'm Bella Vasta and this is Bella in Your Business, a three part agent series that we're currently involved in. And if you haven't hit subscribe, please do so right now or go ahead and share this with someone you might have been talking about. They don't have to be in the pet industry. All right. So the timing of this is also really wild and I need to set this up because the same week that I got that email, the biggest news of the AI year dropped and I'm not being over like zealous about that.

Like, let me translate it for you, because I know most of you saw the headline, but like, it didn't register. You have no idea what it meant because it feels like like a foreign concept. OK, so the headline was that AI just scored 99 percent and we've reached AGI. And you thought, I don't even know what those words mean. Good. Like nobody's behind. So let me translate first. AGI is artificial general intelligence. In layman's terms, It means that a computer can figure out any job a person can do without someone training it for that job first.

And the difference is between like an employee who only knows like one task that you showed them and employee that can walk into any business and just figure it out. AGI, that's the second one. Okay. So every AI company on earth is racing right now to be the first to say we got there. And that's what like every single time when they hit a hopscotch with each other, That's what's happening. The second word that I want you to know is test the AI Companies give their models these tests like when kids take an SAT Okay, so that everyone can compare this one is called ARC AGI 3 like forget the name But it's like think of it like a puzzle Okay, and it hands the brand new AI this puzzle with no instructions No rule book and sees how fast it can score by poking around figuring it out itself So like picture a kid handing a board game with like the missing rule book, right?

You can't memorize a way to score. You just have to learn on the spot. And that's exactly what the new employee does on their first Monday. But here's what happened on September 3rd, OpenAI, the company that makes ChatGPT, it released its newest brain, GPT-6 called Astra. OK, and they said it scored a ninety nine point nine. But one of the founders like Greg Brockman who made the big news this week who is like, you know, we're all gonna die He said for me personally, I don't think we're there.

He meant AGI Okay, and the catch that the headline skipped is that open AI is Was grading on its own homework. So in their version the AI actually got to keep all the rules Okay, so they got to read the rules and then apply it. So it like the headlines weren't as good but incomes politics something's going on with Anthropic right now. And you know, they're all just kind of trying to get the headlines. And so this is where you can come and I'm gonna break it down and like figure it out, okay?

But the point of me telling you this today is that the company that actually wrote the test, the ARC Prize, they ran the same brain of this GPT-6 in their notebook and it took away like all the rules and it only scored a 62.7, okay? Same brain, okay, but they took away the open book test. That's the way to think about it. Okay. Now, this is important because this whole episode is about that notebook. Okay. The notebook moved the score more than the brain did.

Okay. So what AI gets to remember, what it carries around with it, what it has written down about the job, what you have given it, what matters. Okay. You're not waiting on smarter AI. You are building that notebook in this series as with an agent. The people that are not using agents, they don't have this notebook. And that's why they think that that AI is dumb. OK, or it's not good or it's slop. It's because it doesn't have a notebook to go off of.

The whole point in creating an agent is so that you do have that notebook to go off of. OK, and I want you to hold on to that thought, because I'm going to tell you exactly where that notebook lives. And so but to keep it fair and to close out this part, 62.7 is a giant leap. On 96 out of every 100 puzzles, it solves the thing that moves fewer than most people did. It's still doing better than most people did, okay?

All right, so Astra thinks in a way that even people who built it fully can't read it anymore. Their chief scientist said watching what it's doing is getting harder. Regular people meaning your house rules and you double check it matters more and more now, okay? and it's already rolling into the paid ChatGPT plans. It's pretty much rolled out. I don't know many people that don't have it at the recording, which is September 15th, 2026. Okay, so Time To Pet says, yes, the smartest AI in the world just proved the setup matters more than the brain.

So let's talk about the setup, because I want you to be set up to have success and not to come out with AI slop, all right? So, all right, what an agent is an employee made of software. All right.

OK, we have one step or step one. It's it's it's get the app. So whether you're a chat or you're Claude, they both have an app. And so you need to go to the app store, wherever that is. Download the app, put it on your desktop, and then you need to go into Chrome and you need to get the extension.

That is the very first step that a lot of people meet. Miss. OK. And you I would really download it from the company's website just to make sure that, you know, you're not downloading a bootleg or virus or something like that. I built mine the hard way, okay, like in a terminal with a developer next to me, but you don't have to because the door is so much easier. And I think that's where a lot of this like, oh my gosh, agents are so technical came from.

It's not. And if you get stuck, call me, like I'm here to help, okay? Step two, I want you to set it up. And when I mean set it up, I mean like think like a new hire, okay, on purpose. It gets its own room on your computer. So it sees only what you put in there. It gets a brain, which is your voice, your rules, your clients, your prices, the stuff you'd never say. Okay. And it gets the house rules.

Okay. Like what can it touch? What can it never do without you? And then the honest line, like, do you have to set that up correctly? Yes. And that's the part I'm not going to try to teach you in a podcast because I tried to compress it and it doesn't compress. Okay. I cannot possibly auditorily walk you through this. All right. But there is a big prompt. And so in the mastermind, which is where I've actually developed a 13 step module for this, you can and you might be able to and if you don't want to join the mastermind, that's fine.

I'm not here to pitch you. Okay, but I am here to say that you put $177 down for a month in the mastermind. I'm going to make you back that 10 times like and I promise I guarantee you it. But if you don't want to do that either, that's fine. You can go on YouTube and you can listen or find someone that will teach you how to set it up. Okay. Now, mind you, there is not one proper way and path to do this.

AI is a spectrum and everyone does it differently. Same concept and strategy, but the execution is going to look different. So if you want to step by step and you want to see other people that are actually in your business doing it, like in your industry doing it, the mastermind is really the place to be. And hear me when I say no one is behind. In fact, the people in the mastermind, I would say, are ahead of normal, regular society. Okay.

And what they're able to do compoundedly right now is going to catapult their business. And it's going to make their business look a lot more mature in a year from now. Even if not even a year from now, honestly, like the things that are happening in there because they have the use of agents is mind blowing. I don't even know how to verbalize it. Okay. So you want to grab a prompt and you want to start with the agent. You want this massive prompt that's like, this is who I am.

This is what I do. This is what I don't want you to do. This is what I do want you to do. Here are your boundaries. In mine, I've even created a strainer and that big prompt that I give everyone. A strainer is is a sub agent that the main agent you're building actually has look at the work before gives to you. And it cuts down dramatically how many wrong things it gives to you because there's a built-in checker. And so this is the strategy that comes with setting up this first agent properly, okay?

And I don't wanna get ahead of myself here, but I'm going somewhere with this and I want you to stay with me because it's gonna be amazing, all right? Now step four is like you would follow through like the modules that I give you, right? It's like 13 pages printed out, but they're like actual modules. I like vibe coded this thing where you can ask me questions on the spot. It's freaking amazing. I was amazed. But what I want you to do is really think about, and, and if you don't go through the modules, you'll have to think about this, which is probably going to be what's going to like prevent you from going further, but you really have to have this agent like interview you on what your goal is, not how to, but what the goal is, what your boundaries are and what the overall picture is.

So you download the app, you get the Chrome extension, you say, okay, hey, I want to build an agent, help me build an agent. What do you need to know from me? Okay. So now step one, it's like, she's going to be. She, I call her she, cause mine is called Nova. She's going to be like your right hand operations person. This is like the context I want you to have in your head when you set it up. She's going to show up every day.

She's not sick. She doesn't need reminding and works while you sleep. Mine's called Nova. She runs my entire business behind the scenes. Your chief, your chief of staff or your like second hand or whatever you want call them, they can learn anything that you teach them.

I want you to literally think of it as a as a person. And what exactly will your agent need to learn? OK. Number two, hand her the playbook. The playbook is the prompt. It's what the job is, what the job is not, the formatting, the rules, the voice. OK. And the rules that never bend, that they never can go off of.

Like these are my hard boundaries. The difference between someone telling them handle my email and giving them a decision tree for every type of email. OK. Number three is give her the keys. The email, the Gmail API, the Google Drive, the web search, the CRM, the website access, give every tool to connect is more, is one more thing that she can do without interrupting you. Because it's scheduled to say or it's programmed to say like, always allow or allow just for this task.

And you have to keep doing that all the time until you change the permissions to just go. Right. And so there's different permission levels that you can do. All right. And then you want to shadow her. You want to run the agent once with with you watching.

Okay, so when you when you update it and then the second run is clear clean Then she's ready to go solo like your your trust in it is going to increase the more you play with it Okay, and then you want to hire her a QA person the second agent.

This is what I was talking about earlier. I told you to just stay tuned here. The second agent that checks the first agent's work before it ships. Now you have a checks and balances built in. Do you know how wild that is? Okay, nothing ships until the strainer says that it's clean. And that will highly reduce the slop or the mistakes that you get. All right, then the ask and say it like you mean it, okay? So like what I want you to do is I want you to seriously consider if an agent is right for you because it's gonna take some tweaking and it has the feeling like when you first started your business.

You needed to have a lot of resilience. OK. And so that can get really tough when you're trying to do all of it on your own. It really can. It can get discouraging or you can feel like, am I doing it right? Am I doing it wrong? I don't know. And then you just give up. And that's truly where community comes in, you guys. OK. I really do want you to join the mastermind. Like this month, it's only one hundred and seventy seven dollars.

And I'm going to give it back to you. If you show up and you do this, I am going to tell you out the gate, OK, what, how much is your your hour worth? If I were to pay you for your money, your hour or what are the tasks that you're doing all the time? And I'm going to show you how to automate a couple of them using your agent so that you can literally be like, wow, I paid one hundred seventy seven dollars this month and I just saved myself eight hundred and sixty nine dollars a month because my agent just did this.

Truly, that is the exchange right there. I will guarantee you, if you show up and if you go through the modules and do the work and you say it doesn't work for me, I will give you back your money. There is literally no risk in joining us in the mastermind. All you gotta do is go to jumpconsulting.net forward slash mastermind, okay? Literally, okay? If you put in the work, if you do the modules, if you get my help and you can prove to me that it still did not work for you.

I will give you your money back. I am removing every single barrier. I have never done this in the history of all of these 477 episodes, okay? No questions asked, but you have to put in the work and you have to meet me halfway because the how works, all right? And this will drastically change your business. And I know some of you are thinking, okay, Bella, that's you. You do this all day. Let me tell you so that you can't say, oh, it's just me, okay?

Let me tell you what people in the mastermind, other small business owners like you are doing with theirs right now. We meet online, I'm on calls with them like twice a month, sometimes three times a month, and these are direct quotes, okay? I'm gonna keep their names anonymous, but if you want to actually talk to them, just send me a DM and I'll hook you up with them, okay? On August 17th, this person said, yeah, I have an agent doing payroll right now.

It goes and calculates everybody's hours and all their miles and puts it in there and I just have to double check it. She told the whole room the next day, I have an agent go into Time To Pet, pull the work stubs, calculate all the miles it puts into gusto, and then all I have to do is go in there and double check. Go into Time To Pet, which remember, they told me in writing is fine to do. That's why I included it in this episode, okay?

That's the whole concept in one sentence. It reads, it works, it parks, she checks. All right, here's another person. She's a grandmom. August 18th, she goes, so I did it yesterday and I got it got the hours wrong by like cents, cents. OK. And her tips were off just a little bit because this isn't perfect. And I'm going to be real with you. But her next move, she goes, next time I'm going to have them put it into paychecks. I'm telling you this on purpose.

The first pass, it was off by cents. OK. She caught it at the check. And that's what the new hires first week looks like. If you had someone new come in to do payroll, would they execute it perfectly the first time? Probably not, okay. And her second agent that she built, it checks her Time To Pet chat every four hours so that nothing sits unanswered. She tested it live on our call and it worked, all right? This is another sitter, she's in Florida.

Her agents check her clock against GPS. On September 8th, she told the room, it caught one of my brand new hires clocking in 15, 20 minutes ahead and the GPS's were miles apart. The hire saw it and in her words, 24 hours later, submitted a resignation. Three weeks earlier, that was just a goal that she said out loud in there. And we set out to do that. Could you imagine if the business owner did not see that happening? And then all of a sudden the client did.

She could have lost a client. So many of you guys are worried about losing clients. This is truly saving me from that. Another gal up in Michigan her agent reads and drafts her emails pulls her morning and end of the day numbers and Watches Time To Pet pricing. Okay another member watched her do this and goes that daily stuff That is so cool. Okay, her payroll button is in gusto that her office manager runs So that one's gonna stay in gusto another gal out in DC her in two years three developers two chargebacks laying awake at night When she did it with her agent, she told the room on September 8th.

This is how I did my website updates. And it was so amazing. Like it does it all for you. I actually updated the grandmother's website on one of our calls while we were doing other things and just let it run on the screen so they could see those web date, web website dates, up web site updates happening. I know that you know that you want to have your website updated. I know that you know that you're stopped by it because you have to write it all out, you have to send it to a developer, or maybe you already did, and you're waiting for the developer to get back to you.

Now you can do these little things on your own. Need I say that website updates are really important to Google? If your website is stale and been sitting like that for a year, two, three years, never been updated, it's obsolete, okay? Payroll, timesheet, the inboxes, daily numbers, the website, small business owners, pet sitters, they're all in that room. Every single one of them started with the app, the setup and the one job. And they use the modules that I gave them.

This is why I built the modules. The gal out in DC, she says this and I quote, it just seems scary, but I make it approachable. OK, so that's where they are. Here's where you are. You know, it's allowed. You know, the setup matters more than the brain. OK. And that's where people go wrong a lot. OK. You know, the four moves, get the app, set it up, grab, grab a prompt or prompt it somehow. and then follow the steps. You just heard five of your colleagues doing it on their own for a couple of months now.

The only thing between you and their payroll running itself is the setup. And the setup is in the mastermind. 13 modules, self-paced, plus a live lab every week. You probably could get through it in about two hours. At the very most, probably more like an hour. So join the mastermind. It's $177 per month. No contract. You can cancel it anytime. In fact, you can even use Bella 25 and get $25 off a month if you want. $152 to change your business life step by step, proven methods that work.

Okay. And if it doesn't work, if you show up, you try it and it doesn't work, I will give you your money back. That's how confident I am that it will work. The only barrier right now is your own mindset thinking that you can or you can't do it. Obviously, if you're listening to this podcast, you are interested in AI. So I am not here to talk to the naysayers. I think there's a lot of room for a lot of different opinions to be true at once.

So if you're not sure and you want to talk about it, go to jumpconsulting.net forward slash 20 2 0. OK, the choice is yours. I'm handing it to you on a silver platter. Nobody in the industry, in the pet sitting dog walking industry is doing this. You are listening to something where you have a massive opportunity to just catapult your business in your local area to do all of the things that you say that you've been wanting to do. Choice is yours.

And I don't want you to hear this as pressure because no harm, no foul if you choose not to. But you need to at least take away that this is what's possible from this episode. OK, that's a wrap for 477 of Bella in Your Business. Everything we talked about today, episode 475, 476, 472 and 468. The Time To Pet Answer, the AI Employee Handbook, which is the modules, the mastermind, and the free call. It's all in the show notes at JumpConsulting.net.

Just press podcast. In fact, JumpConsulting.net was absolutely just redone with Astra, the GPT-6 I just told you about. I finally redid the front page of my website that I've been wanting to do for a very long time. So go check it out. And if this episode hit, will you share it, please, with someone or in a group? Text it to someone, maybe your local networking group, something. And this is the exact same thing, kind of thing, that's a lot more fun to figure out when you have other people around you.

Trust me, I know that's how I learned. All right? And remember that when life gets you down, always keep jumping. Bye now.
